Notebook: Grizzlies hope for Rubio workout; C's interested?

Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, expected to be a top three pick, could very well come to the U.S. before the June 25 draft to conduct workouts, various outlets are reporting.

If he does, Memphis hopes to be one of the teams he visits. This despite the fact rumors persist that Rubio does not want to play for the Grizzlies.

"If he's in the country, we definitely want him here," Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace told Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

The Grizzlies own the No. 2 pick, and league insiders say they are more than willing to trade it. According to Tillery, interested teams include Boston, Houston and New York.

"Boston and Houston would likely have to offer an established NBA player or two, given that neither team owns a first-round pick," Tillery wrote.

Meanwhile, ESPN is reporting that Rubio has told his current team, Spain's DKV Joventut, that he wants to terminate his contract.

CURRY THE CAT?

New York is said to be high on Davidson guard Stephen Curry, but according to Alan Hahn of Newsday, they may never get the chance to draft him.

That's because another team may trade up to nab Curry before the Knicks' lottery selection at No. 8.

According to Hahn, the teams most interested in making a move for Curry are Charlotte and Portland. The Bobcats currently own the No. 12 overall pick, while the Trail Blazers' first pick comes at No. 24.

Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard has never been shy about making draft day moves, and he'll have plenty to work with this year. The Blazers have five picks overall (four in the second round), and might be able to package some of them, along with a veteran, to move into the lottery.

Curry will work out for the Knicks on Wednesday, according to Hahn. Others expected to join him: UCLA guard Jrue Holiday, North Carolina guard Ty Lawson, Syracuse guard Jonny Flynn, Florida State guard Toney Douglas and Missouri forward Leo Lyons.

RUNNING WITH THE WOLVES?

Recently hired Minnesota president of basketball operations David Kahn and coach (and former VP of basketball operations) Kevin McHale are expected to meet this week to determine McHale's future with the team.

It's hard to envision Kahn keeping around a guy who used to have his job, but the new prez has given no indication as to what he might decide. Those within the organization, however, seem to believe McHale is a goner.

If that's the case, the Timberwolves could target longtime coach and TV analyst Mike Fratello. Kahn and Fratello have been a part of the same organization before, when both had a hand in NBC's pro basketball coverage in the early 1990s. Fratello was a color analyst and Kahn worked on the network's "Showtime" show.

Other names floated by Minneapolis Star-Tribune NBA reporter Jerry Zgoda as possible McHale replacements: Sam Mitchell, Avery Johnson, Jeff Van Gundy and Boston assistant Tom Thibodeau -- who has to be the most mentioned candidate never to have landed a job in league history.

HORNET, AGAIN?

Former New Orleans guard and current free agent Jannero Pargo attended the Hornets' pre-draft workout Monday, but only as an observer.

Pargo spent last season playing in Russia and says he is ready to return to the NBA. All indications are the team he wants to play for most is the same one he left last summer.

"If the situation is best for me to come back here (to the NBA), then I will," Pargo told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "(Playing in Russia) was a wonderful experience. I got to go a lot of places, see a lot of different things. But I grew up dreaming of playing in the NBA. I definitely would love to get back in the NBA and continue my career."

Interesting how Pargo and former Atlanta swingman Josh Childress are acting desperate to get back into the league after spending just one season overseas. Potential lottery pick Brandon Jennings also seemed less than enamored with his subpar stint dodging the NBA's age-limit rule in Italy.

MAVS MOVING UP?

DraftExpress.com has reported that Dallas may be trying to trade its way into the lottery, perhaps to select Arizona big man Jordan Hill.

Other speculation around the league has the Mavs moving up to take Arizona State shooting guard James Harden. No word on who or what they might give up to make such a move possible.

As it stands, the Mavs have just one pick in the draft (No. 22 overall).

personally i don't think anyone BUT Rubio is worth drafting this season. no way does he end up with memphis. the clippers should take him and try to find a way to get rid of davis.

Rubio would be a great fit in Boston. He could compete with Rondo every day. They would both improve so much going head-to-head every day in practice. He could play 15-20 minutes a night and not have too much pressure on him. Steph Curry should be a Knick, it is the perfect fit for him. The Bobcats would be too close to home for him and I don't think he would play much in Portland.
