Power Rankings: Lakers, Cavs make moves to stay on top
By Sam Amico
Pro Basketball News

There are still a lot of things that can (and will) happen between now and the start of training camp in October.

As PBN colleague Chris Bernucca pointed out, we're still waiting for the Minnesota Timberwolves to hire a coach and the Philadelphia 76ers to find a point guard. And as far as I'm concerned, the NBA season doesn't officially start until Allen Iverson signs.

But based on rosters as they stand today, here's my take on the best and worst of the NBA:

1. Los Angeles Lakers - Slid Ron Artest in Trevor Ariza's old role, re-signed Lamar Odom and still have Kobe Bryant. No reason to think they can't win it all again.

2. Cleveland Cavaliers - Much-improved bench now consists of Zydrunas Ilagauskas, Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon, with another signing (Joe Smith? Steve Novak?) likely still to come.

3. San Antonio Spurs - Landing Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess gives Spurs two more guys with Finals experience and makes them biggest threat to L.A.

4. Boston Celtics - Still need a backup PG, but a healthy Kevin Garnett and addition of Rasheed Wallace gives C's length and defense that resulted in title two seasons ago.

5. Denver Nuggets - Haven't done squat this off-season, but sometimes, just keeping the nucleus of team together can work wonders. Especially when that nucleus includes Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups.

6. Orlando Magic - Lost three starters off Finals team (Hedo Turkuglo, Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston), adding Vince Carter and Matt Barnes. Time to adjust will be needed, but Magic could still emerge out of East again.

7. Dallas Mavericks - Everyone is back, happy and healthy. Additions of Shawn Marion and Drew Gooden give Mavs more depth and versatility. Could be a major factor by season's end.

8. Washington Wizards - Return to relevancy is highly likely with returns of Gilbert Arenas, DeShawn Stevenson and Brendan Haywood, and additions of Randy Foye, Mike Miller and especially, coach Flip Saunders.

9. Portland Trail Blazers - Same old very good young talent, now a year older and wiser with valuable playoff experience. Just imagine if Greg Oden finally lives up to expectations.

10. New Orleans Hornets - Chris Paul and David West make Hornets a top 10 team all by themselves, but will need players around them (read: Emeka Okafor and Peja Stojakovic) to play their best to become a true threat.

11. Atlanta Hawks - Only have nine guys under contract, but trio of Joe Johnson, Jamal Crawford and Mike Bibby gives Hawks perhaps most potent backcourt in the league. Still need serious help in the frontcourt, though.

12. Phoenix Suns - Will continue to run and gun with Amare Stoudemire back at center, and no longer need to worry about Shaquille O'Neal getting in the way. Have potential to be league's biggest surprise.

13. Utah Jazz - Could move up considerably once Jazz figure out what to do with Carlos Boozer, who's suddenly become more neurotic than Ron Artest.

14. Toronto Raptors - Still awful soft with leaders like Chris Bosh and Hedo Turkoglu, but should be much more exciting to watch with their brand of European basketball. Will likely be better at end of year than start.

15. Miami Heat - Lost out on Lamar Odom, meaning Dwyane Wade will have to do it all himself again. But things could be worse, as Wade is just that good.

16. Los Angeles Clippers - As usual, a lot of ifs involving injury-prone veterans Baron Davis and Marcus Camby, but good health, improvements from Al Thornton and Eric Gordon, and addition of top draft pick Blake Griffin could make Clips relevant.

17. Chicago Bulls - Losing Ben Gordon won't hurt as much as confidence-building playoff series against Boston will help. So will having a real winner at perhaps the most important position in PG Derek Rose.

18. Charlotte Bobcats - Despite financial woes and biggest offseason move being the one for average center Tyson Chandler, Bobcats still athletic and likely to continue making strides under Larry Brown.

19. Indiana Pacers - Underrated addition of Dahntay Jones gives Pacers defender that was previously lacking. Having Danny Granger back won't hurt, either.

20. Detroit Pistons - No longer a veteran club, Pistons are now rebuilding under another new coach (John Kuester) with new players who don't defend (Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva). Could be fun to watch on offense, though.

21. Golden State Warriors - If Anthony Randolph plays anywhere close to how he did in summer league, small ball will be bigger, and possibly better.

22. Philadelphia 76ers - Hoping Elton Brand stays healthy for an entire season isn't enough. Especially when you have no starting point guard.

23. Houston Rockets - No Yao Ming, no Ron Artest and no Tracy McGrady in his prime means no more postseason for the team that gave the Lakers their toughest playoff series.

24. New York Knicks - Haven't necessarily gotten worse, but have done nothing to improve since last season, when they finished as somwehere around the 24th best team.

25. Oklahoma City Thunder - With an average age of 22.9, Thunder still resemble a really good college team. But watch out, all that talent is gonna grow up soon.

26. Memphis Grizzlies - NBA and network television types likely dread the thought of small-market teams like Memphis and Oklahoma City meeting in the conference finals, but it very well could happen in four years.

27. Milwaukee Bucks - If nothing else, Bucks will play hard and could have some decent stretches. But who other than Michael Redd is capable of doing something when a game is on the line?

28. New Jersey Nets - Devin Harris and Brook Lopez are two reasons for hope, but the rest of the lineup is a mish-mash of washed-up veterans and inconsistent youth.

29. Sacramento Kings - At least the Kings have a coach, which is more than you can say for Minnesota. Still, it seems like 90 percent of the roster is one bad bounce away from playing D-League ball in North Dakota.

30. Minnesota Timberwolves - Boast some nice young talent, especially in the frontcourt with Al Jefferson and Kevin Love. But anything more than 15 wins would be a basketball miracle.

linda I love the nike dunk that I purchased. They are stylish and unbeliebably comfortable. Wearing them, it feels like I'm walking on pillows. Perfect support. Here comes a new pair of Air Jordan Shoes that are sure to be at the top of plenty of young ladies'back to school shopping lists. These little Michael Jordan Shoes are cute as can be with glittery blue sections contrasting an otherwise white design. But as is the case with the iridescent finish on the blue parts, the best features of these kicks require a closer look. That's where you'll find some previously hidden tonal flower designs that add just the right amount of summery shine to these playful dunks shoes.Im a big dude and at first i was unsure how they would fit becaue they look thin in the middle of the Coach Bags but when i put them on and walked for the first time with these Coach Outlet, i was like wow, this is the most comfortable shoe ive ever worn.

Cavs will sink big this season. Guaranteed.

I think that you have somethings right and somethings wrong... Ill start with what I think you have right. I like that you have the Celtics higher than the Magic on the list, and by a lot. I think if they had healthy Garnet and Wallace last season they might have repeated. I do think that you have Clippers right, With Blake Griffin, Marcus Camby, (a healthy) Baron Davis, Al Thorton, Eric Gordon, and Chris Kaman, the only thing that could go wrong is chemistry. Now for the things I didn't like. First of all, the Thunder, I thnki will be amazing this year they are only one solid big man away from being championship contenders. They have Kevin Durant who in his second season was one of the leagues top scorers. They also have Russel Westbrook who showed great skill in his rookie season. And one of my favorites is Jeff Green who can do anything. And now James Harden a rookie who is probobly the second best player in the draft. They should be higher on your list. Then the Washington Wizards are number 8 on your list??? Are you kidding? There is no way in hell players like Randy Foye (a player who showed he was a bust), Mike Miller (a player that could barely even get the starting job on the worst team in the NBA) are gonna make the Wizards better than teams like the Blazers, Suns, Pistons, Hornets, Heat, Bulls, and basically the rest of 9-20. Last and probobly least, why are the Pacers higher than the Pistons? the Pistons just added Ben Gordon and Charlie V. Yes they don't play that great of defense, but the Pacers are team with one good player and the rest are garbage. The have no solid power forward and their centers are always weak. The Pistons at least have a large starting ground, not to mention probobly the best sixth man in the league. The Pacers have nothing except one player, and nothing to help him.

The Cavs pick up Shaq, Parker and Moon and rid themselves of Wallace, Szczerbiak and Pavlovic. To some the Cavs regressed. I'm not sure how that happen since Wallace can't score or defend much anymore, Wally and Pavlovic are both streaky shooter and poor defenders. Shaq/ Big Z > Big Z/ Wallace. Parker and Moon > Sasha and Wally. Go Cavs!!

HA!This must be a joke. Clippers and Bobcats ahead of 20 detroit? This isnrt the same team is last year. Gone are the aging McDyess and Wallace(thank God for the latter)They are noe an offensive Powerhouse (Gordon,CV,Hamilton, Prince,Stuckey)and Joe Dumars isnt done putting them together yet. Number 5 in the east playoffs- I Guarantee it. Cleveland isnt 2 either, they blew their 1 shot last year, 1 player cant win a title.
By: Clownbaby 08/05/09 08:08am
I believe Boston is in the top 3 with the addition of Wallace and Daniels. If they sign a good backup PG and Big Baby Davis then I would put them second behind LA and first if they remain healthy.

As good a guess as any! Not really sure the Cavs actually improved by picking up the Raps former 2/3 starters? That was the weakest area on the Raps the last 2 seasons. Love what the Spurs did, but they still face that old & getting older plus injury risk factor - just like the Celtics, they'll need some real luck to get through a season without losing 1 or 2 star players. Can't wait for Garnett to blow a gasket on Rasheed - should be fun to watch. Rasheed's not Big Baby! Can Washington ever get through a season with this group of players without disaster striking? How much bad luck should a franchise have to endure? Have to admire your optimism about the Suns! Coach of the year material if they make the playoffs. But? D-Wade is that good! But he can't miss many games! Lots of fun! Can't wait to the season to start!

I think Pistons at #20 is crazy! Behind Toronto, Charlotte, Indiana, and (gasp) LA Clippers? That's silly. I think Pistons will be the big surprise this year--back in the Eastern Conference Finals. Betcha a dollar.
By: Rick Kowal 08/04/09 12:05pm
The Wizards IMO are definitely going to be a top 4 team in the East. The last time Arenas and the team was healthy they were #1 in the East until after the all star break when Butler and Arenas got injured. If Arenas is back healthy, on top of the addition of Randy Foye, Mike Miller, and improvement of young players such as Nick Young, Javale McGee, Andray Blatche and Brendan Haywood back healthy on top of two stars like Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison they can easily be a top contender. Oh yeah and don't forget the addition of a underrated coach like Flip Saunders. The Wizards are going to do a complete 360 this year.

yah,you know Lakers is better than last year , other teams have no chance nearly,
By: Kurt 08/04/09 01:22am
What about the Hawks! I think there going to the eastern conference finals!! I'm always right!:)

Peter, in one breath your quoting me, and then in another breath you are telling me I said the Blazers "stink." Hmmmm. .... Fail to see where I said that. ... Hmmmm. .... I've NEVER seen a set of fans so Ga-Ga over a team that has done NOTHING. They got in the playoffs, they lost in the first round, they didn't even look as good as the freakin' Chicago Bulls. ... So, Peter, will the Blazers "stink"? No. But I was trying to be nice and imply that maybe they won't get the homecourt and get absolutely hammered in the first game at home so that Blazer fans don't get their panties all in a bunch. Apparently, that doesn't work. Hmmmm. And I also tried to avoid saying this. LAKER AGAIN BABY! Yeah! ... Hmmmm
By: Dale 08/03/09 09:38am
I'm just happy that Denver is up there... soemtimes I wish we could pull a big guy like Odom(too late) to ensure we stand next tha lakers, but I think we will still be alright when tha season starts.
By: Ian 08/03/09 09:05am
Dale, here are your quotes: “Honestly they embarrassed themselves in the playoffs last season and have probably maxed out.” “… he only has the Lakers, Spurs, Nuggets, and Mavs ahead of them. Maybe the Mavs are a small reach, but the other 4 (you mean 3) sure aren't.” hmmm … in one breath you say the Blazers stink and in the other you seem to agree that they may be the 4th best team in the Western Conference … hmmm …
By: Peter 08/03/09 06:15am
I guess adding Brandon Bass and Ryan Anderson, as well as resigning Marcin Gortat don't count as good moves made in the offseason for the Magic, considering they weren't even mentioned. Also, is it an assumption that Garnett is healthy? I haven't heard much out of the Celtics camp this offseason on how his rehab is progressing. Shouldn't we all hold off on placing them ahead of the Magic until we know the status of his knee?
By: malars 08/03/09 05:19am
Don, Yao did play in all but a few games against LA and the Rockets even won one without Yao. I'm not saying the Blazers are bad but to say the writer is way off base for picking them ninth overall is wrong. They haven't accomplished anything yet. Plus if you break it down by conference, he only has the Lakers, Spurs, Nuggets, and Mavs ahead of them. Maybe the Mavs are a small reach, but the other 4 sure aren't. Don't be blinded by your allegiences.

Sam Amico is the finest basketball writer in the business. And he's a very nice young man.
By: Sam's Mom 08/02/09 06:11pm
Any poll that has Portland 9th is completley out of touch. Dale, Portland gave Houston as much as LA did...the difference being Yao playing against Portland and not against LA. Embarrass themselves? I don't think so. Oden will make you eat your words. You obvioulsy haven't been seeing what Colangelo, Triano, & co has seen this Summer. He still has a ways to go on his conditioning, but I'm really tired of the haters who don't have a clue what he meant to the Blazers last year. And since Oden has been a Blazer, neither the Suns nor the Hornets have finished ahead of them. So your claim is already proven false. Please, quit commenting and embarrassing yourself.
By: Don 08/02/09 05:52pm
Must have taken all of 5 minutes to write this "analysis". Among NJ's washed up veterans and inconsistent youth are the starting point guard and the outstanding rookie 2 guard from the Eastern conference champs.
By: JD down the shore 08/02/09 05:28pm
and chris orlando magic are going to crumble this year, thier chemistry wont work with vc, and umm orlando sucks..
By: al 08/02/09 10:38am
You and i think much alike if i was to put all 30 teams in order this is how it woulda turned out.. GO CAVS!~
By: Al 08/02/09 10:35am
I believe if Mike Brown can play Moon and Parker and give Delonte a rest every once and a while Cleveland is a Lock to come out of the East but Mike Brown is terrible at game management and it showed against the magic
By: Chuck Tee 08/01/09 04:46pm
As an old timer I will be interested to see how well teams like the Spurs and Suns do, with all those guys on the wrong side of thirty. Thank you for the excellent list and best wishes. - Mike
By: Michael 08/01/09 03:33pm
scott, why do you expect ratings to have "credibility"? it's just an opinion piece. i like the blazers but don't believe the hype just yet. have a lot to prove after running and hiding like little school girls AT HOME in their first playoff game. and i agree with amico that the wizards, clippers and suns could be considerably improved if all the pieces fall into place. did he rank them too high? probably. but i'd rather read something like this than the same old "safe" predictions from a lot of other publications.
By: DB 08/01/09 12:37pm
Good stuff, makes me wish the season was starting soon. I think LA is primed for a great year. I'm not sold on Cavs. I think they got worse on defense end of the floor. Warriors and Thunder may surprise some people this year and win 35-40 games. Wizards are going to be much improved next year, Coach Saunders is an offensive genius and will get all those pieces to fit together nicely. They could be a top 5 seed in the East easily.
By: Jed 08/01/09 11:54am
lol, dale, you will eat those words when they end up in the finals.
By: Jed 08/01/09 09:36am
Wizards!!! The credibility of this ranking just flew outta town like Clay Bennett. You've got the Wizards up there over Utah, Atlanta, and PORTLAND! Then you insult everyone's intelligence by putting the Clips at 16. Absurd.
By: Scott 08/01/09 09:00am
no way are wizards eighth!! they might make the playoffs because the sixers will be bad and there will be a vacancy but let's not kid ourselves. arenas is a gunner not a winner and stevenson wnd haywood have litte to offer.
By: jared 08/01/09 08:29am
nice call on the wizards. you can't count on arenas knees, but even without him they'll be a threat. people don't realize how good foye is because he played for those sorry twolves teams. if arenas is able to stay healthy i don't see any reason the wizards can't do what the magic did last season.
By: Wiz4Life 08/01/09 07:17am
I dont think the youth on Portland is really that great. Honestly they embarrassed themselves in the playoffs last season and have probably maxed out. Oden is what he is, a bust who will always be a backup center. you watch, suns and hornets will finish ahead of the blazers.
