Could deeper Spurs be best in the West?
By Sam Amico
Pro Basketball News

A few San Antonio thoughts:

* Spurs coach Gregg Popovich had some interesting things to say to Peter May of the Boston Globe, discussing everything from Bruce Bowen's possible retirement to the team's offseason moves.

* Popovich on Bowen, the longtime Spurs forward traded to Milwaukee in the Richard Jefferson deal (the Bucks then waived him): "He might come back with the right team in the right situation, but it's probably not going to be San Antonio."

* That makes sense, as Bowen is 38 and while he's still a potential contributor, he wouldn't get many minutes with Jefferson, Roger Mason, Michael Finley and, of course, Manu Ginobili in front of him.

* There have been reports Boston was interested in Bowen, but he did not feel the same. Washington is said to be another possibility, as is Atlanta.

* Popovich on new addition Antonio McDyess: "He's Kurt Thomas, but a better scorer."

* Seriously, is there a more perfect veteran find for this team than McDyess? With his professionalism and team-first attitude, he makes the ultimate Spur.

* The Spurs' starting lineup will look something like this: C Tim Duncan; PF McDyess; SF Jefferson; SG Mason; PG Tony Parker.

* Off the bench will be Ginobili at shooting guard, Finley at small forward, Matt Bonner at power forward, George Hill at point guard and veteran Theo Ratliff at center.

* Popovich is also high on rookie power forward DeJuan Blair. "He's going to play right off the bat for us," Popovich told May. "He can rebound. I'm not going to teach him how to shoot threes. We know what he can do."

* Popovich also called Jefferson "a grown up" who is a great fit personality-wise. "He has a great sense of humor. You can coach him and he can respectfully talk back to you. Timmy enjoys him."

* Finally, Popovich indicated he thinks the Lakers are still the West's best team, but he likes what the Spurs have done. "If we had come to training camp with the same group we had at the end of last year, everyone would have gone into major depression," he told May. "I would have been saying, ‘follow me,' and turned around to find nobody there. It was time to change the music and I think we've done that."

* Personally, I think the Spurs and the Lakers are neck-in-neck, with neither clearly superior to the other. If I absolutely, positively had to give anyone an edge, it would be the Spurs. But I reserve the right change my mind on a daily basis.

FREE AGENCY NOTES

* Training camp is only a little more than a month away. Some unrestricted free agents who can help your team: Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury, Flip Murray, Keith Bogans, Rob Kurz, Luther Head, Rashad McCants, Melvin Ely, Ime Udoka, Brevin Knight.

* Interestingly, both Stephen Graham (Indiana) and Joey Graham (Toronto) are unrestricted free agents. Wonder if this is the first time in history a pair of twins have been free agents during the same summer (and still unsigned)?

* Marbury is still on the Wizards' radar, but not much gets done in August, as this is the one month a lot of general managers kick back, relax and take a vacation.

* Murray is said to be another possibility with the Wizards. He could also end up in Los Angeles with the Clippers.

* Anyone know what's going on with Steve Francis these days?

* While the summer of 2010 is The Year of LeBron James (as well as Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh), there are a lot quality people who will either be or can choose to be unrestricted free agents who rarely get mentioned. Among them: Manu Ginobili, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce.

* Also, Utah forward Carlos Boozer will be available and would be perfect for a team seeking a borderline All-Star who constantly has one eye on the door.

* Tracy McGrady, Jermaine O'Neal and Derek Fisher also come off the books in 2010. But it's doubtful any will be starting material by then.

linda I love the nike dunk that I purchased. They are stylish and unbeliebably comfortable. Wearing them, it feels like I'm walking on pillows. Perfect support. Here comes a new pair of Air Jordan Shoes that are sure to be at the top of plenty of young ladies'back to school shopping lists. These little Michael Jordan Shoes are cute as can be with glittery blue sections contrasting an otherwise white design. But as is the case with the iridescent finish on the blue parts, the best features of these kicks require a closer look. That's where you'll find some previously hidden tonal flower designs that add just the right amount of summery shine to these playful dunks shoes.Im a big dude and at first i was unsure how they would fit becaue they look thin in the middle of the Coach Bags but when i put them on and walked for the first time with these Coach Outlet, i was like wow, this is the most comfortable shoe ive ever worn.

I live in Dallas but grew-up in SA, i love the spurs and am a die hard spurs fan. But Popovich waited too long to start to rebuild, he need to hv done it after the last championship w cleveland. WE knew right then age was affecting the spurs; when they were going into those scores lapses. I think Pop's ego cause him to think he could still win w that group. Even if Ginobili would hv bn there last yr we would hv had serious problems against a team like the lakers. You can't hv full quarter scoring lapses. We've see if the new guys will make a differce! r.t.

Well lakers fans beware.Spurs all the way to the championships.Yipii

WHOOOOOOOOOOAAAH Spurs fans and h8trs, We've made some good off seanson moves, and yes, we did lose to Dallas in the first round, second time exiting early in 13yrs but, if any of you all ever played at a high enough level of SPORTS period; Our additions only looks good on PAPER 'til Nov. My concern is our continuous signing of big old Veterans when our Triple threat is aging everyday. Let's start looking for more picks like DeJaun Blair, in the rough with youth to compliment our BIG 3!! Yes Theo Ratliff and Antonio McDyess are quality players but, do they make us more athletic for 82 games is my concern. I still be routing REGARDLESS!!........BTW, DENVER GOT A PASS TO THE CONF FINALS. HAD THEY PLAYED US IN THE FIRST ROUND, THEY'D BE FISHIN LIKE USUAL! BE 4REAL!

Boy, you guys are a long way off. The Spurs will be a very good team, but is the addition of RJ and Dice enough to turn a 1st round loser --who lost to Dallas, who then lost to the Nuggets who then lost to the Lakers --a championship team who is going to beat the lakers in the west? I think perhaps you guys need to set your sites a little lower --first beat out the Nuggets for the 2nd best team in the West and then look at the possibility of beating the lakers.

i think spurs will win the championchip cuz they got a nice . even if we losed in the playoofs of 2009 cuz of the injuries , but now our team is healphy and we will win the championchip
By: spurs 2010 champ 08/19/09 07:52pm
I seriously think the whole injury-prone talk is stupid! You are a Spurs fan have a little faith in your team! Your really sayin nothing when you talk about "oh if we stay healthy we will win the Championship!" Well no duh!!! I think that is obvious seeing that there are 8 other serious contenders in the NBA for a title, that all believe the same thing! Look injuries are goin to happen as do people get sick at work, its part of the job! So don't make excuses or get tears in ur eyes when it happens. A fan stays positive in the craziest of situations as do the Spurs! So next time you leave a message, make a point not an excuse. Definatly don't whine, have faith, believe in our Spurs and say "regardless we will be Champions this year, cuz we have what it takes!!!" Stay strong and never doubt your Spurs!
By: N-DLZ!!! 08/19/09 08:07am
Just 2 things to say. Love the spurs and they will win again this year. As for the Lakers it is quite simple for all you loser Laker fans. Enjoy the small success as when Kobe is done the Lakers will no longer be contenders for a long time.Kinda sad one man makes a winning team.
By: Ty from Texas 08/19/09 08:06am
I can`t wait to see George Hill guarding Kobe on a third quarter when he use to score more points, while Dejuan is cleaning the boards...DEFENSE is the Spurs trade mark.
By: jimmt 08/19/09 06:59am
lakers back to back PLEASE, it aint gonna happen. the main reason they won was cuz of the clutch play of ariza. how many times did he bail out thelakers throughout the playoffs? this is why i knoe the spurs will win the title this year. ron artest makes more dumb plays than good plays, he is not a cerebral player
By: lupac 08/19/09 06:39am
Good stuff. I think the Spurs will contend and have a great year. Jefferson is the player they have needed for a long time.
By: Jed 08/19/09 05:45am
why isn't haislip being mentioned in any column? i think he's the x factor...
By: johncabs 08/19/09 04:09am
Mr. Amico, I sent an E-mail to another writer on spurs.com and it is almost identical to what you wrote. I agree completely with you. I don't think anyone realizes the impact Blair is going to make. Pop is gonna unleash the beast, he has something to prove(you other teams should'nt have passed him up, and he's gonna let you know after every win. Chris, sshhhhh, that's how Tony plays. That is what makes him elite, he gets right back up. Shaq said a couple years ago, if you remember, that he could and would stop Tony. Well Suns fans, did that happen? Try Lexapro, it helps with the depression. Go Spurs Go
By: Truman 08/19/09 01:27am
I've been a Spurs fan since they walked through the Hemisfair arena doors. The Spurs should be very good and if any coach can bring them back, it'll be Pop. I wish I thought they were a good as the Lakers(who I despise with a passion) but the Spurs need to see how the team chemistry clicks. The first thing they need to do, is not let any of their players, especially Duncan, Parker and Gionobili play any off season basketball, except under the supervision of team coaches, until they retire. Spurs fans have became very spoiled. Realistically, who would have ever thought the small market Spurs would have 4 NBA titles. If it were not for a very good owner, Pop, R.C and lady luck, I never thought the Spurs would have 1 NBA title. GO SPURS GO for #5!!!!!!
By: JTEX 08/19/09 01:24am
I think coach Popovich should consider picking up Allen Iverson as he could bring a lot of good things to the Spurs....
By: Doug 08/18/09 10:54pm
go spurs go the starting line up to me should be T.Parker R.Mason R.J Timmy D @ RATLIFF THIS LINE UP ALLOWS duncan to be at power forward where he's more affective @ it allow mcdyess to be a better back up for duncan Ginobili will be 100% because there's no need to rush him back because behind RJ FINLY'S a good back up making us stronger down the stretch!! imagine this senerio tony parker RJ Ginobili TD @ DEJAUN BLAIR yes blair he has something to prove @ that makes him dangerous to the opp like the FAKERS!!! GO SPURS GO
By: CELO 08/18/09 08:07pm
That is a massive call chris, the lakers having more championship experience! The amount of rings that the spurs own compared to the lakers tells me one thing.... its not rocket science to see the spurs might just have a bit more experience!!! As for the injuries situation, anything can happen in 82games, however with a better bench this year Pop will have the luxury of giving Timmy and Manu good spells on the bench. Like I said earlier I see my spurs cleaning up!!!
By: Parker2010MVP 08/18/09 07:49pm
GO SPURS GO! This year's roster is best 1 yet. Very excited for season to start. Lakers got nothn on the spurs. Tim is in search of his 5th ring, no stopping them.

Spurs look great! The defense suffered a little last year compared to past years. I wonder how Bowen would do as a part of the Spurs as a defensive coach along with carlisimo.
By: Phil 08/18/09 05:22pm
I think one area where the Spurs have a great advantage is in their strength of character. The Lakers have never given me that "one big happy family vibe",.When it comes to personal and team integrity, the Spurs are hard to beat. With smart coaching and conditioning they should have their best season since 2007.
By: stephen 08/18/09 04:28pm
Look for the spures if healthy to win the title this year. The have the best starting five and bench. They say the lakers are still the favorites because they are the champ. Doesn't matter they don't have a point guard, the spures do ala Tony parker coming off the best year.Fisher is to slow a can't hang with parker. He's only good for one shot at the end of the game.Basketball is a game of match up. The lakers dont match up with the spures in the point guard postion. To mr bus u guys need a point guard to even get close to the spures. iverson and marberry are still out the ???? spures and celtics in the finials.....keep your eyes on rookie senation dujuan blair if he gets the minutes which he should, he going to be a diaper dandy.spures should win at least 60+ games
By: surge 08/18/09 03:45pm
Because the Spurs could care less about their regular season record, you will see the "injury prone" players have few minutes. This gives the chance for them to rest as well as allow the younger players to learn the system. We might lose games here and there while the Lakers go full-steam ahead for the best record in the West but when it comes down to the final 15-20 games, you will see a Spurs team in perfect chemistry. As long as the Spurs are without injuries, they can take the Lakers any day. Go Spurs Go!
By: The Augustus 08/18/09 02:28pm
Cavaliers signed Rob Kurz to an unguaranteed contract and will be in training camp.
By: MYoung23 08/18/09 12:45pm
Lakers Championship Experience? Bonner, Duncanx4, Ginobilix3, Parkerx3, Finley, RJ has been to the finals with the nets, Mcdyess, The Spurs have more championship experience and playoff experience then the lakers do, so Chris their so called "championship experience" is NOTHING compared to the spurs, did you just start watching NBA basketball last year or something? I think this year you will see Duncan with very limited minutes. 30-32 a game during the regular season. Popovich is going to monitor him severely pending everyone else stays healthy. I really think ginobili should have limited minutes as well maybe around the 27 minutes per game during the regular season, just so he stays rested.
By: Mike 08/18/09 11:31am
The main reason why the Spurs have a slight edge, if any, in Sam's mind is Tim Duncan. TD is that good even at this age. He squares up against any 4 or 5 in the league and has been doing so for about 10 years. He will not only get you about 20 and 10 but he is a defensive presence that his swingmen and guards can rely on should they beat them off the dribble.
By: Chris4Houston 08/18/09 11:11am
if the playoff is to-morrow, I would bet my moneies on the spurs over the fakers in seven!(west final), can,t wait for the season to start! go-spurs go!
By: stewart quan 08/18/09 10:53am
That is a big IF they stay healthy, Mr. Parker, which I think he would not be because of the way he plays the game.
By: Chris 08/18/09 08:31am
Hi Mr. Amico. Hope all is well. I tend to disagree that the Spurs have the edge over the Lakers despite the fact that Los Angeles is the reigning NBA champions. The Spurs have aging veterans who are injury prone like Manu Ginobili, Theo Ratliffe, and yes even Tim Duncan. By the time of the post season, after a grinding 82 games, I don't think they will be healthy. The Lakers' youth, length, versatility and championship experience will prevail.
By: Chris 08/18/09 07:53am
What a powerful starting lineup!! And the bench!!... If ginobili stays healthy for the majority of the season, I see my spurs cleaning up the lakers!!
